THE HMS SYSTEM

The HMS Hybrid Marine propulsion consists of 6 major parts.
These elements work together with the control unit and the power management system.
The HMS Hybrid Marine propulsion system is a fully integrated system and can be operated via touchscreen on the helm station.

Engines can be selected by clients’ choice.

The E-Unit has been especially developed and manufactured in Germany and Austria. The E-Unit works as an electric motor and generator. The E-Unit also helps maneuvering going backwards. It is scalable from 50-1,000 kW. Overall, the electric asynchron motor in the E-Unit has a 97% efficiency.

The gearbox is developed by HMS and manufactured in Austria. The HMS gearbox allows immediate reactions on the propulsion.

Propeller can be selected by clients’ choice.

HMS only uses marine proof and highest quality battery suppliers from Europe to guarantee long life span and up to 8,000 and more charging cycles. The client can choose the size of battery.

Clutches open and close connections between different components within fractions of seconds. This enables seamless switching between the different drive modes.

ELECTRIC MODE

In Electric Mode the vessel runs fully electric with all engines shut off. The integrated Hybrid Batteries supplies the E-Unit, acting as an electric motor with power to run the shaft and rotate the propeller. Electric manoeuvring allows the propeller a very slow rotation at 300rpm or lower.

– Very slow speed
– Easy docking
– Free of noise
– Free of emissions
– Free of vibration
– No engines running

HYBRID MODE

The Hybrid Mode is our most efficient long range cruising mode. It was specially developed for slow and medium speeds.

While speeding up, at certain speed one single engine actives itself and runs the shaft with diesel power. The E-Unit on the active engine side immediately turns into a generator and supplies power in form of electric energy directly to the E-Unit on the other side (where the engine is off). There the E-Unit acts as an electric motor and runs the second shaft electrically.

– Ultra-long range
– Less vibration, fumes and noise compared to standard systems
– Lowest fuel consumption
– Up to 50% reduction of maintenance and wear and tear
– Up to 50% savings on service costs
– Up to 70% of reduction on emissions
– Engines alternate every 5 hours or every system start

HYBRID MODE

TWIN DIESEL

The Twin Diesel Mode describes the traditional propulsion system.
It is used for fast speed. Hybrid Batteries and E-Units are not active.

TWIN DIESEL – GENERATOR MODE

While cruising in Twin Diesel Mode it is optional to active the Generator Mode. This mode allows using additional power from the engines for charging the Hybrid Batteries. The E-Units function as generators. The HMS offers 3 configurations for charging – Low, Mid, High. The operator feels no loss of power on the propulsion while charging.

– Recharging Hybrid Batteries while cruising
– Full battery capacity on arrival at marina or bay
– Operated via touchscreen

TWIN DIESEL – GENERATOR MODE

While cruising in Twin Diesel Mode it is optional to active the Generator Mode. This mode allows using additional power from the engines for charging the Hybrid Batteries. The E-Units function as generators. The HMS offers 3 configurations for charging – Low, Mid, High. The operator feels no loss of power on the propulsion while charging.

HMS DRIVE MODES

TWIN DIESEL –BOOST MODE

While cruising in Twin Diesel Mode it is optional to active the Boost Mode. This mode allows using additional power from the Hybrid Batteries for supplying energy to the E-Units. The E-Units function as motors. The HMS offers 3 configurations for boosting – Low, Mid, High. The operator feels no changing of power on the propulsion while boosting. Within seconds the consumption of fuel drops down to 40% or less.

– Fuel saving up to 65% or more
– Lower load on engines
– Less wear and tear on engines
– Increased speed
– Reduction of noise

GENERATOR MODE

The Generator Mode enables ultra-fast charging of the Hybrid Batteries. In this Mode the vessel is not moving and the engine generates power for the E-Unit transferring energy into the Hybrid Batteries.

Under tested circumstances, the HMS solution can charge 170kWh of battery power with 2x 100kW E-Units within less than an hour and using only 26 liters (6.9 gallons) of fuel.

– Automatic switch off

GENERATOR MODE

The Generator Mode enables ultra-fast charging of the Hybrid Batteries. In this Mode the vessel is not moving and the engine generates power for the E-Unit transferring energy into the Hybrid Batteries.

Under tested circumstances, the HMS solution can charge 170kWh of battery power with 2x 100kW E-Units within less than an hour and using only 26 liters (6.9 gallons) of fuel.
